Sushi Oga is well known among sushi enthusiasts, with its original location in Sakai—a district south of Osaka’s Tennoji—being one of the most difficult restaurants in Japan to book, often filled up a year in advance. The second branch has now opened on the B2 floor of the Six Senses Kyoto.
The brand was founded by the fourth-generation successor of Yasuke, a sushi restaurant with over 80 years of history. He opened Sushi Oga across from his family’s shop, reimagining Yasuke’s traditional shari from the ground up based on his own training and experience. By combining this refined rice with premium tuna from top Ginza suppliers, the flagship quickly became a destination for sushi lovers nationwide.
Wanting to make the experience available to more guests, Sushi Oga Higashiyama was created inside the Six Senses Kyoto. The counter is led by Chef Sakai, who trained for seven years at the flagship.
The shari blends three types of white and red vinegar for a crisp, balanced flavor. Guests can enjoy a variety of premium tuna cuts—akami, chutoro, otoro—sourced from the same Ginza suppliers as the main branch. The 10-seat counter is set in a calm, simple Japanese space that echoes the flagship in Sakai.
The omakase course includes 5 to 6 seasonal dishes and 11 to 12 pieces of nigiri, served with antique tableware that adds a sense of character and charm to the meal.
Six Senses Kyoto is the brand’s first hotel in Japan and is located within 10 minutes by taxi from JR Kyoto Station, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and Yasaka Shrine, making it easy to combine a sushi experience with exploring the city.
