Established in 1965, Naniwa Kappo Kigawa has become a cornerstone of Osaka’s culinary culture in Hozenji Yokocho.
This historic kappo restaurant continues to honor and evolve “Osaka cuisine,” a tradition deeply rooted in the city’s merchant heritage. Known as “The Nation’s Kitchen”, Osaka fostered a unique approach to food, emphasizing the principle of “minimizing waste”; using every part of an ingredient to enhance flavor. This philosophy, aligned with today’s sustainability values, defines the essence of Osaka cuisine.
At Kigawa, chefs transform Osaka’s rich bounty of seafood, mountain and regional ingredients into dishes which celebrate the city’s culture and flavors. Owner and head chef Ueno, who trained in French cuisine to expand his skills, blends French techniques with traditional Osaka kappo cooking. His creative, boundary-pushing dishes captivate diners and preserve the spirit of Osaka cuisine. Chef Ueno also leads the “Osaka Culinary Society”, where local chefs gather to refine their craft.
Today, Chef Ueno and his son Shohei work side by side to carry the Kikawa legacy forward. For anyone wanting an authentic taste of Osaka’s culinary heritage, Naniwa Kappo Kikawa is a must-visit.
