Kodaiji Temple, a historical Kyoto landmark associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and celebrated for its renowned cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, has stood for over 400 years.
Kodaiji Tantora was established as a invitation-only Guest House restaurant created by a luxury car dealership to host its esteemed VIP customers. Located halfway up the slope of Nene-no-Michi, the entrance of Tantora resembles that of a private residence, marked by a gate lantern sign at the foot of the stairs.
Once through the gate and along a small path, guests are welcomed by an entrance that feels like a traditional home. Inside, the restaurant features a long, spacious counter with just 10 seats, offering an intimate setting with a garden view through glass at the back.
Kodaiji Tantora specializes in tempura and crab cuisine. Tempura is served all throughout the year and tagged crab is served in the autumn and winter (from early November through the end of March).
Head chef Masaru Oba, a true connoisseur of crab and an expert in tempura, presents refined seasonal dishes, while manager Naoto Mori, who previously worked in providing hospitality to Company Group VIPs, warmly welcomes guests to Kodaiji Tantora. English cards with descriptions of the ingredients are provided to assist international guests.
Each dish is served on exquisite tableware crafted by Fukagawa Seiji, a renowned Arita porcelain maker that won the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition.
The space, hosting, and uncompromising selection of premium ingredients for crab and tempura offer an exceptional experience, making Kodaiji Tantora a restaurant you’ll want to return to whenever you visit Japan.
