Just south of Bukkoji Temple and steps from Kyoto’s Shijo-Karasuma Station, Kanzan is a Michelin-selected Japanese restaurant known for its elegant, seasonal cuisine.
Chef Kazuma Yagi, who found his calling in the joy of hearing “That was delicious!”, trained for over 20 years at prestigious establishments including Kyoto Arashiyama Kitcho and Hiiragiya Ryokan. His approach focuses on careful preparation, letting the natural flavors of each ingredient shine without relying on flashiness. Many guests are amazed at how deeply flavorful even the vegetables are.
The restaurant’s signature dish is its vibrant and artfully arranged “hassun” —a seasonal appetizer platter that looks almost too beautiful to touch. Another standout is the house-made plum soy sauce blended with wasabi, a perfect pairing for sashimi and a delightful match for sake.
Kanzan’s dishes are served on antique ceramics such as Edo-period sometsuke and Karatsu-ware, a nod to Chef Yagi’s roots—his family runs an antique shop. The harmony between food and vessels enhances the cultural experience.
With only 10 counter seats, Kanzan offers an intimate setting where guests can watch the chef craft each dish with care, savoring refined Kyoto cuisine at its finest.
