This is a package plan in which you can enjoy a Kabuki performance at the historic Minamiza Theater with an English interpreter, followed by a dining experience at the long-established traditional Kyoto cuisine restaurant Daitoryo.
Enjoy a Kabuki performance at Kyoto's famed Minamiza theater
「Journey into Kabuki ~Appreciation and Experience~」
As a new initiative at the Minamiza theater, the theme of this performance is "Kabuki that can be enjoyed regardless of age, nationality, or language".
In addition to watching the performance, this package allows you to enjoy various types of experiences at the same time.
In the theater lobby, you will find displays of props used in the performance, such as horses and boats, musical instruments that produce sound effects, and stage costumes, all of which you can touch and experience firsthand. We are also planning a workshop on 'Tsukeuchi' (a type of percussion used in Kabuki performances).
Additionally, on stage, humorous commentary is presented by Kabuki actors, followed by a vibrant Kabuki performance . During the commentary, we plan to invite a few audience members on stage to participate. To make the performance enjoyable for international guests, we will provide consecutive interpretation in English as well as English audio guides.
A Dining Experience at Traditional Kyoto cuisine Daitoryo
Enjoy a special moment at Daitoryo, a long-established Kyoto traditional cuisine restaurant which boasts over 70 years of history.
This red-walled restaurant is located in a corner of a narrow alleyway of the charming Pontocho area along the Kamogawa River in Kyoto.
Once inside, you will find an authentic Kyoto atmosphere, housed in a 140-year-old renovated traditional Japanese building, where you can enjoy traditional Kyoto cuisine centered around yuba (tofu skin).
The restaurant takes pride in its hospitality and offers seasonal dishes which use plenty of Kyoto's vibrant local ingredients.
The owner, who is a licensed Kyoto tour guide, is also well-versed in communicating with English-speaking guests and is able to provide not only delicious cuisine but also exceptional knowledge about Kyoto's history, culture, and sightseeing.
At night, you can enjoy the beautifully illuminated views of the Minamiza theater and the Kamogawa River.
- On days of good weather we will invite you to step out onto the second-floor balcony to take photos with the Kamogawa River and Minamiza theater in the background. (Photos will be taken through the window on days of bad weather.)
- While showing the guests the painting of Shijō Kawara by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige alongside the current Kamogawa River, we would like to take the time to explain the origins of kabuki, the story of Izumo no Okuni, and the history of the Minamiza theater (including details about the tower on the roof and the maneki signboards for the kaomise performance).
